What to See in Yerevan: Eight Places and a Practical Plan

Start with central Yerevan, then allow separate journeys for sights farther away. Trying to visit all eight places on foot in one day leaves little time for museums or a relaxed walk. Choose your stops around your interests and the opening hours on your travel date.

Eight places for a first visit

    1. 1. Republic Square

Begin with the square’s architecture and the surrounding streets. The History Museum of Armenia and National Gallery are nearby. If you want to see the evening fountains, check the current season and schedule first.

    2. 2. The Cascade

Explore the terraces, stairways and sculptures. On a clear day, the views extend across Yerevan towards Mount Ararat. Consider the steps and check access to the indoor escalators if mobility is a concern.

    3. 3. Tsitsernakaberd

Allow a separate visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum. This is a place for a quiet, unhurried visit rather than a brief stop between central landmarks.

    4. 4. Matenadaran

Discover Armenia’s manuscript heritage. Check opening hours, admission and available museum tours before visiting. Museum tickets and guided visits are separate from transport services.

    5. 5. GUM Market and Vernissage

These are two different places. GUM Market is a choice for food and edible souvenirs; Vernissage focuses on crafts and other handmade items. Check the days and hours before setting out.

    6. 6. Erebuni

The fortress and museum are outside the compact tourist centre. Plan a separate journey and enough time to explore the site.

    7. 7. ARARAT Museum

If Armenian brandy interests you, check available visits and tasting arrangements in advance. Do not assume admission or a tasting is included in a city transfer or sightseeing drive.

    8. 8. The Blue Mosque

Check visitor access before arriving and respect the dress and conduct requirements of an active religious site.

A manageable day in the city

For a central walk, combine Republic Square, the Opera area and the Cascade. Add Matenadaran if its opening hours suit your plans. Tsitsernakaberd and Erebuni are easier to plan as separate journeys. Your walking distance depends on the stops you choose.

    Exploring with a driver

See the Yerevan city tour itinerary. It has its own list of stops: the eight places in this article are not automatically included. Professional guide services and museum admission are arranged separately under the terms of the selected service.

For another day, explore Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones or Lake Sevan and Dilijan. For your arrival, view the Zvartnots Airport to Yerevan transfer.
