Frequently Asked Questions
This tour to Northern Armenia is a journey to two major monastic complexes on the UNESCO World Heritage list and to one of the country's most ancient basilicas. The itinerary includes: Haghpat Monastery (10th-13th centuries) - a majestic complex that was a major spiritual and scientific center of medieval Armenia. Sanahin Monastery (10th-13th centuries) - another outstanding monument, closely associated with Haghpat, known for its academy and unique architectural solutions. Odzun Basilica (5th-7th centuries) - one of the earliest and best-preserved churches in Armenia, located on a scenic plateau overlooking a gorge.
This is a full-day journey, so be prepared for a long but very scenic drive. Duration: 10-11 hours. Distance: The total round-trip distance is approximately 450 km (about 280 miles). The trip is absolutely worth it if you want to see UNESCO World Heritage sites and enjoy the stunning green landscapes of the Lori region, which are very different from central Armenia.
The price of a private tour depends on the vehicle you choose (sedan, SUV, minivan). The price includes: transfer from any point in Yerevan and back, a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with a driver, bottled water. Not included: meals and guide services (at your request). Important note: Entrance to all monasteries (Haghpat, Sanahin, Odzun) is free, so you will have no additional ticket expenses. Guide services cost extra for every vehicle category. Passenger insurance is not included in the tour price.
Haghpat and Sanahin were designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites as outstanding examples of Armenian religious architecture, which reached its peak in the 10th-13th centuries. Experts noted the unique fusion of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture with the traditional vernacular building styles of the Caucasus. These monasteries were not just temples but major centers of science, culture, and enlightenment.
Odzun is one of Armenia's most ancient churches, built in the 5th-7th centuries. It belongs to the rare type of a domed basilica. Its main value lies in its well-preserved exterior and a unique memorial stele with intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the Bible and the history of Armenia's Christianization.
We will stop for lunch in one of the towns in the Lori region, such as Alaverdi or Vanadzor. There are restaurants here where you can try authentic dishes of northern Armenian cuisine. Your driver will recommend the best place for a rest and a delicious lunch.
Given the very long duration of the trip (10-11 hours) and the extended time spent in the car, we recommend this tour for adults and older children who are interested in history and architecture and can easily handle long drives. It may be tiring for young children.
Comfortable, seasonal clothing and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the large monastery complexes with their stone floors and stairs. It's also a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater, as the weather in the Lori mountains can be cooler than in Yerevan.
We conduct exclusively private tours. For such a long and packed itinerary, this is the best format, allowing you to feel comfortable, be independent of a large group, and make stops for photos in the most beautiful spots.
Choose the date, passenger count and vehicle, add a paid guide if needed, then enter your contact details and send a booking request. Trip details are agreed during confirmation. No prepayment.
